Course Description

Introduction -this session will be an introduction to the course and the concept of creative writing, making the students think about their favourite pieces of creative writing and what makes them so good

Creating Characters – an interesting piece of creative writing must have an interesting character, so we will explore how a writer creates a character the reader will be invested in.

 Creating Settings – the plot of a story often revolves around the setting, so we will discuss how the setting and description of it, influences the plot.

 Creating Speech – this session will involve explaining punctuation around speech and when and how to use speech to improve a piece of creative writing.

Making a Second Draft – the writing students have done previously were first drafts, so now they will learn how to write a second draft, improving upon their previous work.

Stimulating exercises–  look for exercises that will develop specific writing skills. Brainstorming as part of the group process. creative problem-solving for common writing troubles.

The finished product – we will read the final drafts by every student and review where they have used the skills learned in the class. We will focus on reinforcing what the students have learned throughout the course.

Thinking out of box when starting to write in a structure ( Using Literary devices Similes, Metaphors, Alliteration, Personification)

Creating all the ingredients for a compelling story.

Writing to Persuade – Identify a persuasive text and the language techniques

Writing to Describe – Identify a descriptive text and the language techniques

Fiction texts – Identifying fiction, short stories and story telling

Non-Fiction texts – Identifying Non-fiction, newspapers, reports

 (Introduction to comprehension) – this week will be a quick introduction to what will be covered on the course followed by a few activities to ascertain the level each child has worked to already at school.

(Think like a detective) – Instead of worrying about understanding the meaning behind every detail within the passage or text, focus on thinking like a detective who searches for answers.

 (Inference questions) – this session will focus on how to infer information which is not explicitly stated in a piece of writing.

(Types of comprehension questions) part 1- week 4 will focus on different types of questions Selecting information/closed questions, analytical questions

(Types of comprehension questions) part 2 – week 5 will focus on the remaining types of questions Word or phrase questions reasoning questions

Course Description

Advanced Reading Comprehension session with tips and techniques to comprehend the answers

1. Students will improve reading comprehension skills by participating in guided reading activities to answer comprehension questions focused on the use of inference skills, compare and contrast skills, main ideas and supporting details, analysis skills, and application skills.
2. Students will identify new vocabulary using context clues, synonyms, and antonyms.
3. Students will write summaries of each article that reflect their understanding of the main topics presented in the article using graphic organizers and note taking strategies.

1. Root Words, Prefixes and Suffixes: ( concept of root words and how they are derived, for eg root word ‘dict’ means ‘Say’, kids can guess the words with dict, like dictate, root word of ‘linguist’ is ‘Lingu’ and it means ‘ toungue’ .. similarly different types of suffixes and prefixes

2. Animal, Plants, Food Vocabulary: (singular and plurals for animals , plants and food)

One word substituitons Vocabulary:( understanding idioms and phrases eg., ‘something that continues for a long time, recurring frequently’ answer is chronic, ‘to make right’ means rectify, ‘something that gives comfort or relief’ means solace etc., ‘a loud unrestrained burst of laughter’ means ‘Guffaw’

4. Idioms, phrases, proverbs and phobias( its raining cats and dogs means what?, she is a night owl, we had a whale of time

Looking at some famous speeches
Discussing the arguments for and against a few different topics

Course Description

The focus of this class is to encourage a love of singing and a deeper understanding of singing technique. This class will help a hesitant singer gain confidence. No one will be asked to sing alone, unless they want too. Singing with a group will help your child’s confidence to grow until they are more confident in their ability to sing out!
