Reading Comprehension- Using Good Reading Strategies to Understand What We Read
In this masterclass, students practice using good reading strategies to help them make sense of what they’ve read and to think critically about a text. This online programme is designed especially for 11+ preparatory students and primary school learners will benefit in general.
What is comprehension? Students will get a brief introduction to the topic and what will be learnt in the class.
How to succeed in the 11+ comprehension: a few exam techniques tips!
Introductory activity: 11+ Definitions. Designed to make student’s vocabulary and writing more sophisticated and varied.
Word Bank: Throughout the session teacher will suggest that each student creates their own ‘word bank’. This is essentially a list of great words that you will learn in the class. You can then add to them yourself in day-to-day life. Stick your word bank up in your room, on the fridge, or wherever! Just keep looking over this list and you will soon have your very own ‘word bank’ in your head for when you are writing a story or have an exam!
Practice makes perfect! The rest of this class will consist of different activities and worksheets designed to help the students with their practical comprehension skills and allow them to put what they have learned into practice. I will provide feedback, advice and explanations after each activity.
At the end of the session teacher will also provide a suggested reading list for students. Reading is a key way of helping to foster children’s imagination, enlarge their vocabulary, and to help their general reading and writing skills.
